New Tab scholarship honors longtime Scholarship Committee treasurer, Trustee Eddie Lee Johnson
$2,000 scholarship will go to a Tab member majoring in accounting or finance

The Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church Scholarship committee is unveiling a new scholarship that simultaneously helps students aiming for a career in accounting or finance and honors a beloved longtime scholarship committee member, the late Eddie Lee Johnson.  Johnson was also a longtime member of the Tabernacle Board of Trustees.

The Eddie Lee Johnson Memorial Scholarship is a one-time $2,000 nonrenewable scholarship set to debut in the next (2018-19) academic year.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must:

  • have at least a 2.5 GPA;
  • be a graduating high school senior planning to major in accounting or finance and be accepted to an accredited institution OR be an undergraduate currently enrolled and majoring in accounting or finance, and
  • be a member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church

Students who qualify and want to be considered for the inaugural Eddie Lee Memorial Scholarship must:

  • verify acceptance or enrollment in an accredited institution;
  • write a 500-word essay discussing the reason he/she is majoring in accounting or finance;
  • present a letter of recommendation from a teacher, administrator or professor;
  • participate in an interview with the Scholarship Committee;
  • present an official transcript, and
  • submit the application, essay, and supporting items by April 1, 2018 to a Scholarship Committee member or to administrative assistant Beatrice Wright.

Applicants will be interviewed in May, and the scholarship recipient will be announced in June.

Trustee Johnson, whose professional career spanned decades, served as treasurer of the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church Scholarship Committee for more than 40 years.  Longtime Scholarship Committee members plus scores of students helped by Tab scholarships recall that Johnson was passionate about young people pursuing higher education… and about providing a means of making it more affordable for them.  They added that Trustee Johnson would have been proud to know a young person is sharing his passion for the field of accounting or finance.
