Sermon by Pastor Nathan Johnson, June 29, 2025
In a world teeming with distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s truly important. Every day, we’re bombarded with information, events, and circumstances that vie for our attention, threatening to pull us away from our spiritual path. But what if we could learn to stay focused amidst the chaos? What if we could discern between what’s eternal and what’s merely temporal?
The Illusion of Control
One of the greatest distractions we face is our desire for control. We often find ourselves preoccupied with knowing “when” things will happen, believing that if we can just pin down the timing, we can better prepare ourselves. This illusion of control can be particularly dangerous when it comes to matters of faith and eternity.
Consider the disciples in Matthew 24. They were so focused on knowing when the temple would be destroyed and when the end times would come that they missed the more important message Jesus was trying to convey. Jesus reminded them – and us – that no one knows the day or hour of such events, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.
This truth should liberate us. Instead of trying to predict or control the future, we’re called to stay ready. As the saying goes, “If you stay ready, you won’t have to get ready.” This applies not just to the end times, but to our daily walk with God. Are we living each day as if it could be our last? Are we making choices that align with our faith, regardless of when we think the “big events” might occur?
Deceivers, Disputes, and Disasters
As we navigate this life, we must be aware of the many distractions that can derail our faith journey. Jesus warned about deceivers – those who claim to have special knowledge or unique interpretations of God’s word. These individuals often use flashy platforms or miraculous claims to draw attention, but their ultimate goal is to lead people astray from the truth.
We’re also cautioned about becoming overly distressed by disputes and disasters. Wars, rumors of wars, natural calamities – these can easily consume our thoughts and lead to panic. Yet Jesus tells us that these things must happen, but they are just the beginning of birth pains. Like a mother in labor, we may experience pain and difficulty, but it’s all leading to something new and beautiful that God is bringing forth.
Despisers and Defectors
Another reality we must face is that not everyone will appreciate or support our faith. Jesus warned that believers would face hatred and persecution. This opposition can come from unexpected places – even from those who once walked alongside us in faith but have since grown cold.
It’s crucial to remember that these challenges are not meant to discourage us, but to refine and strengthen our faith. As Jesus said, “the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13). Our goal isn’t to have a quick start in faith, but to hold on, endure, and stay committed until the very end.
Staying Focused on the Eternal
So how do we stay focused in a world full of distractions? Here are a few key principles to remember:
- Recognize the temporal nature of earthly things: Everything we see around us – buildings, possessions, even our own bodies – is marked for eventual destruction or transformation. While we should be good stewards of what we have, we shouldn’t become overly attached to things that won’t last.
- Stay grounded in God’s truth: The world is full of deception, but God’s word remains true and unchanging. Regular study and meditation on scripture can help us discern truth from lies.
- Don’t panic over world events: While we should be informed and engaged citizens, we shouldn’t let news of wars, disasters, or conflicts overwhelm us. Remember, God is still in control, working all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
- Expect opposition: Not everyone will understand or support your faith journey. Some may even actively oppose you. Don’t let this shake your conviction. Instead, see it as an opportunity to demonstrate Christ’s love and forgiveness.
- Guard against spiritual apathy: It’s easy to become lukewarm in our faith, especially when faced with constant distractions. Regularly examine your heart and ask God to renew your passion for Him.
- Focus on endurance: The Christian life is not a sprint, but a marathon. Commit to staying faithful for the long haul, through both joys and trials.
- Remember the bigger picture: All the challenges and distractions we face are temporary. They’re part of a larger story God is writing – one that ends in victory for those who remain faithful.
The Strength to Break Free
There’s a powerful story about a full-grown elephant tied to a small stake with a thin rope. The elephant has more than enough strength to break free, yet it remains bound. Why? Because as a baby, it was tied to that same stake and couldn’t break free. Now, even though it has grown strong, the elephant still believes it’s not powerful enough to escape.
This story beautifully illustrates how many of us approach our spiritual lives. We remain bound by past failures, doubts, or sins, not realizing that in Christ, we have the strength to break free. The chains that once held us back no longer have power over us – unless we continue to believe they do.
As we navigate this distraction-filled world, let’s remember the power available to us through faith in Jesus Christ. He has the ability to break every chain, shatter every yoke of bondage, and set us free to live the abundant life He promised.
Don’t get distracted by the noise of this world. Instead, fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Stay ready, stay focused, and keep walking forward in faith. The journey may be challenging, but the destination is worth every step.
